Don't Waste Valuable DVR Space for 'Mental' on FOX

I finally got around to watching Mental on my DVR. It's the new show from Fox that airs on Tuesday nights at 9pm. According to Marc Berman at PIfeedback.com, it finished third in it's hour with 5.8M viewers.

From the minute it opened I felt that there was something not really authentic about it. It was as if I was watching a B movie. If you've ever watched a B movie, you KNOW it's a B movie the minute you turn it on. The acting, not so believable, the camera angles seem amateurish (I'm not an expert, but it just seemed so.. well that is the best word I could come up with). It just seems contrived. It doesn't suck you in to something that seems "real".

When you watch a show that is good, like Desperate Housewives, Grey's Anatomy & Brother's & Sisters, what pulls you in are the characters. They are well developed, well written. There is depth right from the beginning. There was absolutely no depth for me in this show.

It just didn't do it for me and I imagine that it will be quickly canceled, although there have been 13 episodes ordered. I believe one critic said that it was a "House" want to be in a mental hospital. That about sounds right. The only thing I liked about it was that the lead actor Chris Vance (Prison Break) was nice to look at.

Sorry Fox, this is one of the worst shows I've seen on TV in awhile. I may give it one more chance with the second episode, but it won't be one that I'll use valuable hard disk space on my DVR for.

From the Big Screen to the Small Screen - Chris O'Donnell Coming to CBS This Fall

It used to be that small screen actors would move from TV to movies like Jennifer Aniston, Will Smith and many others, and while that trend is continuing today (think Katherine Heigl. We don't know for sure if she truly is leaving Grey's Anatomy. There are so many rumors floating around, but, she has had success at the box office) I've really noticed over the last few years that the trend is actually working in reverse. I'm not talking just guest spots or appearances, but some big screen actors are moving into their own series or recurring role in an ensemble class. Some have been successful , some have not .

This fall Chris O'Donnell (who had guest spots on Grey's and NCIS, and The Company) had unsuccessfully tried to foray into the small screen with Head Cases in 2005 that was canceled after 1 season. This season he is trying again and will be a member of the ensemble cast of an NCIS Spin off on CBS slated this fall.

I thought it would be kind of fun to run down some of the successful and not so successful big screen actors who have attempted the small screen. We all know one of the most successful is Keifer Sutherland on '24' that is slated for it's 8th season this year. Then there is Kyra Sedgewick (The Closer), Holly Hunter (Saving Grace) , Martin Sheen (The West Wing), Charlie Sheen (Spin City and Two and a Half Men), Brooke Shields (Suddenly Susan), Candace Bergen (Murphy Brown and Boston Legal), Whoopi Goldberg (The View), Patricia Arquette (Medium) , Gary Sinise (CSI:NY) and Sally Field (Brother's and Sister's).

Sally Field has come full circle, it seems, as she actually started her career on TV with a role in the 1960's sitcom Gidget and then went on to the Flying Nun. She then became a big screen star in the 80's. She made her first attempt at TV in 2002 with the series The Court that was quickly canceled. She is now part of an ensemble cast with another big screen actor turned successful TV Star, Rob Lowe on Brother's & Sisters that will enter it's fourth season this coming fall.

Then there are those that have made attempts that didn't quite pan out. Last year Christian Slater starred in My Own Worst Enemy. In 2006 Gina Davis starred in Commander In Chief that started out strong but faded and was cancelled. Other actors that have made the attempt at TV have been

  • Chevy Chase - The Chevy Chase show 1993
  • Faye Dunaway - It Had to Be You - 1993)
  • Bette Midler -Bette 2002)
  • Richard Dreyfuss - The Education of Bickford 2002
  • Shirley McClaine - Shirley's World 71/72
It seems, however, that Chris O'Donnell has a shot given that NCIS has been so successful and currently CBS is the most watched network on TV. Oh yeah.. and it also stars LL Cool J! Yummy! Watch the preview below. It's looking good!

Pushing Dasies, Eli Stone & Dirty,Sexy Money Fans --Remaining Shows to Air in the Summer

Well in case you didn't already know Eli Stone, Dirt, Sexy Money and Pushing Dasies were all canceled by ABC mid season. What you may not have known is that not all the episodes of those shows have aired. Sometimes the network quietly airs the remaining shows in the summer. By quietly, I mean you really don't see any commercials for them so unless you automatically have them on your DVR to "record all new episodes" you won't even know they are on and you'll miss it.

In putting together a list of what shows are airing when I came across the information that these three shows will be airing their remaining episodes on the following dates/times;

5/30 - Pushing Dasies - 10pm on ABC through 6/13
6/20 - Eli Stone - 10pm on ABC through 7/11
7/18 - Dirty Sexy Money at 10pm on ABC through August.

Now, I was devising this list because sometimes schedules overlap and if one happens to fall as the "third" show in the same hour one week or at a certain time, well your DVR will not record one and record the other two and you missed it. As crazy at it sounds you need to strategically place your shows on the appropriate DVR in your house so that this doesn't happen. It's more a problem during the fall season, but can happen in the summer. As a little aside, I also consider which shows my husband really likes to watch so that I can record them in our bedroom where he is most likely to watch them. The ones only I'm interested in I try to recored in the living room. Yeah.. I know it sounds crazy right? But it works. Remember, I watch TV, TV doesn't watch me.

It's also difficult to keep track of all that's on and when, especially with the cable networks adding so many good new shows in the summer. Here is the list I've got so far and that I think is pretty thorough;

I hope this information helps.

It's Looking Ugly for Ugly Betty, Southland and Medium - Friday Night Death Slot

Friday night in the television industry is notoriously known as the Friday Night Death Slot. No joke, if you google it, it has an entry in Wikipedia.

ABC, in releasing their new schedule, has moved Ugly Betty from it's 8pm time slot on Thursday to Friday at 9pm. The show, a ratings grabber in it's first few seasons, has been declining in its ratings and so ABC has decided to put it on its death march! It will be replaced by the new show Flash Forward followed by , of course, Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice.

Ugly Betty isn't the only show being moved to Friday. NBC has not renewed Medium. Fortunately for us Medium fans, it was picked up by CBS and will air after Ghost Whisperer on Friday nights at 9pm. This could actually be good for Medium because it will follow a similar themed Ghost Whisperer (I happen to be a fan of both of them) . CBS Friday night line up has actually been an exception to the Friday night death slot rule in having been mildly successful with Ghost Whisperer and Numbers (if these shows received the ratings they have received on any other night against other more popular shows, they probably wouldn't have lasted). The Ex List, a newcomer last season that filled the 9pm time slot, didn't survive and was canceled. I'm really hoping Medium holds it's own. I would hate to see it canceled. It is so very good.

Probably the most disappointing move to Friday for me is the new show Southland. It originally took over the ER slot on Thursdays. Apparently it started out strong in the ratings, but then fell off and so was moved to the 9pm hour between Law & Order (also moved to Fridays) and the Jay Leno Show. I think a new show starting the fall season on Friday is, well not so great for it's future. It's a shame. It really is a good show with lots of grit. Keeps me waiting for something to happen and on my toes. Kind of reminds me how ER used to make me feel when it was really good (it's been boring the last 2 or 3 seasons but I've stuck with it out of loyalty).

So.. my Friday night DVR will be recording:
8pm - Ghost Whisperer (CBS)
9pm - Medium (CBS) , Ugly Betty (ABC) & Southland (NBC)
10pm - Jay Leno (NBC)
Missing from Friday nights is Terminator: Sarah Connor Chronicles which has been canceled (bummer.. I loved that show too). Another example of a victim of Friday night time slots. I personally can't believe that Dollhouse was renewed. I thought the show was terrible. I don't think it will last very long and may be finished by the 2009-10 fall season end.

As further evidence that Friday night can signal the death of a TV show, the following shows were successful until they were moved to Friday night:

  • Diff'rent Strokes
  • 8 Simple Rules
  • Life with Bonnie
  • Step by Step (actually moved to CBS and put on Fridays and was it's last season)
  • Family Matters (suffered same fate as Step by Step)
  • Jag

Other Friday night failures included:
  • Robbery Homicide Division
  • Close to Home
  • Moonlight (great show that no one was watching)
  • Dr. Vegas
  • Swingtown
  • The Ex List

Evidence of how Friday night time slots for new shows affect a shows ability to capture an audience; at the start of Everybody Loves Raymond in 1996-97 season it aired on Fridays to low ratings. CBS kept the show, moved it to Mondays and, well, we all know how well that show has done (9 seasons). CSI also started on a Friday, performed poorly and was moved to Thursday and has been one of the most successful CBS shows catapulting CBS into the #1 watched network (knocking NBC from that slot).

All in all , if you are an Ugly Betty Fan, Medium Fan and you enjoyed Southland, it could very well be that they may not be around for much longer. Let's hope that that is not the case, but if TV history is any indication well it doesn't look good. I'll be watching the Nielsen numbers to see how they are holding up and whether they will be able to stick it out to stick around and of course I'll be blogging about it.

Wipeout Didn't Disappoint Last Night - Goode Family Tanked

Ah.. Yes. Bring on the big red balls! Perhaps they should say bring on those hurdles. Last night made me laugh so hard I cried. There is something just so hysterical about watching adults flail about when they bounce off those balls, try to get through the new "Bridge Too Far" (the name alone makes me laugh) and that sucker punch. Last year it was the Big Red Balls that were my favorite, but I think my new favorite is "The Hurdles". Just thinking about them right now is making me laugh.

For those who missed Wipeout last night, the new obstacle course is even harder. If it is even possible to make this course more Wipeout guaranteed, they have certainly done it. Those hurdles on the first course was the most laugh inducing thing of the entire night. Those things kept popping up and down throwing contestants in the air and flipping them over at times unaware. The best was the one contestant that was sitting on them and, as the host said , was doing a "ride em' cowboy". They improved the "Sweeper" and renamed it the "Sweeper Gyro" , the "Slippery wall".. man I just lost it, and the" Catapult" at the last and final obstacle course.. my goodness. There's much more (like Plank in the Face..LOL).. oh man, I'm laughing so hard as I type this.

And it was a hit last night with TV audiences. According to Marc Berman at pifeedback.com , Wipeout placed #2 in it's hour with 8.64 million viewers. The Goode Family, on the other hand, did not do so well ( I skipped this one. I just can't get into the cartoon family thing) with only 3.93 million viewers. I don't think the Goode Family is going to stick around. But I'm sure glad Wipeout will. I haven't laughed like that since I was a kid.

Freddie Prinze Jr. joins '24' and the Action Takes Place in NY!

Two clock in at '24' Freddie Prinze Jr. joins '24'

I'm a big 24 fan. The first time the series came on, I skipped it. Then, when I had been working and found myself out of a job, I went to the video store and the entire first season of 24 was for rent. So, I rented the first DVD, sat on the couch and watched it. I believe it was 3 or 4 hours and I was completely hooked. Once that DVD was finished I immediately went back to Blockbuster to get the next one. I literally spent the next day watching the entire series. It was commercial free, of course, so it wasn't quite 24 hours but it was a long time. I remember thinking, while watching it, how can anyone watch this on TV and patiently wait to see what happens next week?!! It was so intense that I actually developed a headache from the intensity of the drama . Yeah... I know a little nuts. I realized that 24 is probably best dealt in doses of an hour a week, rather than straight watching because I'm positive the headache was from all the tension I had while watching it. Of course, the next season and all the seasons after I DVR'd it and watched it as the season unfolded. Of course we did have 1 year where we had to do without Jack Bauer thanks to the writers strike.

This past season delivered just as 24 always does. I never tire of it and it never gets old. Although you wonder just how the heck does Jack Bauer keep on ticking! The season ender didn't actually end really, as we were left wondering if , or rather how, Jack Bauer recovers. Come on, we all know Jack Bauer isn't going to die! There would be no 24 without him. The questions I'm left wondering are what happens to the President's daughter and the President herself in the aftermath of her daughter's actions? Will she be the President in this next season? And how they heck is Bauer going to get dragged into yet another debacle?!

Over the last few days it's been released that Freddy Prinze Jr. will be joining the cast as a Jack Bauer want to be (I don't mean that in a negative way). I wonder, if Jr is received well, could he possibly replace Bauer? Would the show be as good without Jack Bauer? I don't know. I don't think it would be the same and I may lose interest if Keifer Sutherland leaves the role but Freddie Prinze Jr is going to be fun to watch and he's easy on the eyes. Also joining the cast next fall is Jennifer Westfeld (Kissing Jessica Stein) and John Boyd ( I honestly don't know who he is.. LOL). Jennifer will be playing an ambitious journalist with ties to Arman Hashemi (played by Kapoor) and John Boyd a CTU Analyst (hmm.. does this mean that after having decommissioned CTU, they bring it back officially?).

But.. the coolest part of Season 8, and the one that had been rumored for quite some time, is that all the action will take place in NY City!! Now THAT is going to be fun to watch, especially for this girl who was born and raised in NY (although now living in PA). If you live in NY keep your eyes out for production teams shooting scenes for next seasons 24.... which is already in production. And, if you are reading this blog, share with me what you see or hear! I'd love to know what they have in store for Season 8 and blog about it of course!

Remember When Summer TV was full of RERUNS?

Do you remember when the summer meant that there was at least 3 months where there was nothing but re-runs on TV? Before the days of the DVR, it was a great chance for you to get those shows you couldn't fit into your schedule when they re-ran. (At least that's what I used to do). I remember back in 1991 when FOX put Beverly Hills 90210 on in the summer and gave us a special Summer Season. That was the start of what has become a flock of summer shows!

TNT is really heavy on some good solid shows over the summer that also happens to run in the winter. I noticed that their seasons are "shorter" but more frequent and not as much time passes between their "season finale" and their new season. At least that is the case when it comes to shows like The Closer and Saving Grace. Raising the Bar did have a longer wait period between seasons as did Leverage. All of these shows are returning this summer.
Monday Night:
The Closer at 9pm followed by Raising the Bar a 10pm (EST)
Tuesday Night:
Hawthorne (new) at 9pm followed by Saving Grace at 10pm
Leverage and the new show Dark Blue will be on Wednesday at 9pm and 10pm respectively.

Two of my favorite from last summer are coming back. The hilarious Wipeout (ABC 5/27). I've had spontaneous bursts of silly laughter while watching people .. well wipe out. The commentary those two hosts make along with the drawings are just so silly it's hysterical - like milk shooting out of your nose funny . And then there is I Survived A Japanese Game Show (ABC 7/8). Of course, America's Got Talent on NBC is also returning on 6/23 and So You Think you Can Dance (LOVE that show) on FOX, is already under way. I can't wait to see more Mia Michael's choreographed routines. She is my favorite of all the choreographers. Her dances are amazing!

And then there is my ULTIMATE FAVORITE summer guilty pleasure BIG BROTHER on CBS returning in JULY! My mom and I watch that religiously. She even subscribes to the feed. She's fortunate to have a job that she can listen to the streaming feed while she works..LOL.. then she spills all the stuff to me on the phone later. I could technically since I"m at home, but I have a lot to do during the day and spend the time outdoors with my little man and watching a feed like that all day is a little over the top for me, especially when I could be outdoors in the beautiful summer weather. Getting the juicy stuff from my mom though, makes a difference. You totally view each of the housemates in a different light because there just isn't enough time to show all of their high jinx!

The rest of the summer landscape is a lot of reality and fluff TV from the networks. Although the Great American Road Trip on NBC sounds interesting.. especially for those of us foregoing a vacation in this economy. We can live vicariously through the TV families that will be..well taking that Road Trip across the U.S while competing against each other. I'm a Celebrity Get me Out of Here on NBC, while it sounds kind of cool, I have a feeling we'll get bored with it early. My husband is excited to watch that though. Dating in the Dark, on ABC also sounds interesting but pretty cheesy. We get to watch as people date each other over a course of a few weeks.. you got it, in the dark. At the end of the show the lights will come on and they'll have to decide whether they want to see each other or not. Shows like that are like train wrecks. You know their wrong, but you just want to watch to see what's going to happen. I'm not one for Cartoon family shows ala Simpsons and The Family Guy so I'm probably going to skip The Goode Family. Since I'm not much into sports, I'm probably going to also skip The Superstars.. both from ABC
I'm looking forward to The Listener on NBC and the Philanthropist. Not so sure how I feel about Merlin also from NBC.

I hear True Blood is going to be back on HBO this summer.. I really need to subscribe to HBO. but gave it up for Showtime because my husband LOVES Dexter (yeah.. it's pretty awesome) and I love the United Sates of Tara. I did watch he first season of True Blood and found it pretty cool. I may just add HBO to my subscription.

And my DVR thought it was going to get a vacation!

From Movies to TV Series - 2 Shows Slated this Fall

So much to blog about my head is spinning. So, let's break it down into topics shall we.

In looking at the fall line up announced by ABC, CBS, NBC and FOX there are two shows scheduled this year that are based on well loved films from the 80's .

The first, Eastwick, will air on ABC on Wednesday's at 10pm. It's based on the 1987 film The Witches of Eastwick starring Jack Nicholson, Susan Sarandon , Cher and Michelle Pfeiffer. It will star Lindsay Price (Lipstick Jungle), Sara Rue (Less than Perfect) and Rebecca Romijn as the three single woman living in New England who discover they have supernatural powers.

First. the movie was great. Secondly I was a fan of Charmed that aired on the WB. From the trailer above it seems that Eastwick is a Lipstick Jungle (loved that show) meets Charmed. Lipstick Jungle was an excellent show, but obviously not strong enough to last..but at least it outlasted Cashmere Mafia. Charmed ran for 6 years and while I loved it.. it was corny but it worked and in the end it was a feel good show with some moral values taught amidst the fighting.. good verses evil type of feel. It was a family show. Eastwick clearly plays to an older female crowd, but will they buy into the witch magic stuff like the audience of Charmed? Will the female empowerment feel be able to sustain a large enough audience to keep it on the air? Is it just too corny and cliched? That formula did not seem to work well for either Lipstick Jungle or Cashmere Mafia. If Eastwick turns out to be as witty as it seems it may be, it could appeal to the Desperate Housewives audience..and perhaps all of us Charmed fans now a few years older, will find the new take on witchcraft appealing. I will definitely check the series out, but my gut is telling me that it will be another show I start watching that will quickly fade.

The second show Parenthood coming to NBC on Wednesdays this fall at the 8:00 hour is based on the 1989 Ron Howard film of the same name that originally starred Steve Martin and Dianne Wieste. Ron Howard is a producer on this TV show. What I didn't know was that there was a half hour comedy version of this movie out in 1990 that aired briefly on NBC that failed. However, this time, I have to say that I believe this will be a HIT ala Brothers & Sisters. The cast is an absolutely amazing ensemble cast which includes Maura Tierny (ER) , Peter Krause (Six Feet Under and Dirty Sexy Money) and Craig T. Nelson among many other well known, liked and respected actors/ actresses (I'm a fan especially of Tierny and Krauss who I'm happy to see are in what I think is an excellent show after having had their previous gigs come to an end). Now this is a show that will be filled with stuff that will make you laugh and cry and sometimes laugh and cry at the same time. It reminds me very much of the winning formula that made Brothers & Sisters so very good. Just looking at the trailer below I can see that they are strongly developed well written characters that instantly you are going to identify with. The acting chops on this cast makes this a sure fire hit..at least in my book.

Lastly, just for fun, I wanted to recall some hits and misses with regard to Movies that became TV shows. One of the most successful , of course, was MASH. Other's included Friday Night Lights, Mr. Belvedere (based on the movie Sitting Pretty) that ran from 1985 - 1990 (yeah.. I didn't know that either), The Odd Couple and Private Benjamin (1981-83). Some unsuccessful attempts included Ferris Bueller in 1990 (movie was great.. TV show bombed), Big Fat Greek Wedding, Planet of the Apes.. and one that I'll always remember Kiss Me Guido (based on an independent film by the same name that I know personally because I had a song on the movie soundtrack).
So .. tell me what you think about the two series I talked about here that is up an coming. I'll have more up as the summer wears on and we near closer to the new fall season.

RECYCLED TV : Next up this FALL V from ABC

I was extrememly excited when I happened upon information about an upcoming series this fall. Anyone remember "V" from the 80's. I do. Man did I absolutely LOVE that series. Well, ABC is resurecting it this fall. The above is the trailer preview. It really looks good. I wish I could remember the other series and exactly what happened. I wonder if they'll just come up with completely different scenarios or similar situations. With today's high tech effects, the show should be amazing. Silly to be so excited about a TV show, but I can't help it... after all I'm a TV

DVR addict, remember..

I do hope that this one does much better than some of the other ill fated remakes like Knight Rider, Bionic Woman. So far Beverly Hills 90210 seems to be holding it's own. I must say , I do like it. It's my guilty little pleasure. Even though I'm no longer a teeny bopper (heck, I'm 34 years old!) it's strangely relatable. Smart of them to bring back some of the o

ld 90210'rs.. otherwise I may have just skipped it. I am also looking forward to Melrose Place due out this fall as well.

Let's hope that Melrose Place and V do well. Can't wait!

The TV Blog

I have a love for TV. I have ever since I was a kid. I remember being an avid fan of Little House on the Prarie and if I missed an episode there was hell to pay in my house. My love for TV grew with the introduction of the DVR. My dear husband purchased the first one for me, TIVO. That was before Cable companies started coming out with their own DVR Boxes. Soon, we had two Tivo's in our house. I now have two HD DVR boxes. Each box can record 2 channels at one time. There are nights when I have all four channels of my DVR going!
You may wonder.. am I a couch potato? How do I find so much time to watch so much television? Well.. the TV is always going in my house and I'm the queen of multi tasking. The secret to my TV watching is that , while I work from home, I put the less thought provoking TV shows on (think Soaps and Reality Shows) that I listen to in the background while I work. I also watch most of my TV when my 3 year old son is tucked safely in bed by 9:30pm. That's when I rip out the juicier shows like Grey's Anatomy and the new one Southland.
I am an active person. I work out at least 3 days a week at the gym for at least an hour each time. I also manage to take my son to the park almost every day for a few hours. The point is, TV can be something that you watch, but that doesn't watch you. If you know what I mean. I am a confessed TV DVR addict. I've even turned my husband on to a few TV shows that he likes to watch with me and we watch together. Although a lot of the shows he ends up liking end up getting cancelled (like Life on Mars).
I decided to turn my love for the Internet and being on it and my love for TV into this blog. Maybe it will make me some money. Why not.? I'm an entrepreneur and anything I can do that is creative that will allow me to make some dough, I'm all for it.
So.. I hope that you find my blog fun, enjoyable and that you participate with your comments. Share with me your favorite shows, what shows you think will rise and which will sink.
Welcome to Confessions of a TV DVR Addict.
